AFT PENNSYLVANIA STATEMENT ON COUNTING EVERY VOTE

Harrisburg, PA, November 4, 2020— On behalf of its 36,000 members and 61 locals, AFT Pennsylvania President Arthur G. Steinberg, on Wednesday evening, issued the following statement regarding the ongoing count of votes across Pennsylvania and the United States.

“What we saw yesterday—and in the weeks leading up to the election—is an amazing testament to the resilience of our democracy. By all accounts, more people will have voted in the 2020 election than in any election in American history. While it ought to be easier to vote in our country, it was inspiring to see the lengths people went, in the middle of a pandemic, to make their voices heard.

“But it’s not over. Millions of mail-in and provisional ballots that were received by 8pm on Election Night, and those postmarked November 3rd and received by this Friday, November 6th, are still being processed and counted. Given the unprecedented number of mail-in ballots cast, with the focus on keeping people from congregating unnecessarily at polling places, it will take some time yet.

“While our endorsed candidate for President, Joe Biden, appears to be pulling ahead and holds numerous paths to an electoral college victory, AFT Pennsylvania states, unequivocally, that we must count every vote.”
