**PRESS RELEASE**

AFT PENNSYLVANIA STATEMENT ON ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE MURDER OF GEORGE FLOYD

Plymouth Meeting, PA, April 20, 2021—On behalf of its 36,000 members and 61 locals, AFT Pennsylvania President Arthur G. Steinberg on Tuesday released the following statement on the guilty verdict handed down on former police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd:

George Floyd should be alive today. Today’s guilty verdicts in the murder of George Floyd provide a glimmer of hope that our criminal justice system can work, it can hold those entrusted by the public to account.

“Although we are relieved that George Floyd’s family, friends, community, and our nation have some semblance of closure, there is still a tremendous amount of work to do to ensure that Black and brown people do not continue to live in fear that a traffic stop, loud music, or just walking down the street could end up in death. We will not have true justice until racism in all its forms is routed out.

“That it was even a question that a murder, which took place on video for the world to see, would result in anything but a guilty verdict says all there is to say about how little trust there is in our institutions to hold the powerful to account.

“Black Lives Matter. Always have. Always will.”
