AFTPA offers condolences to Delaware Valley Charter HS community

September 23, 2014

For Immediate Release

Statement by AFTPA President Ted Kirsch
on the shooting death of a Delaware Valley High School student Monday

"AFT Pennsylvania offers its condolences to the Delaware Valley Charter High School community over the loss of their beloved student Aisha Rhaman, 15, an innocent bystander who was gunned down after school on Monday. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Rhaman’s family, friends and the DVCHS teachers and staff.

"Her death is a reminder that each one of us has a responsibility to work together to end the rampant violence that robs so many our children of their childhoods, their educations and their lives. With a new school year, we must renew our commitment to give all children the tools to resolve conflicts without anger and violence and to make our schools and communities safe places in which all children have the opportunity to develop into happy, successful adults."

Teachers at Delaware Valley Charter High School are members of the Alliance of Charter School Employees, Local 6056 of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO. It is one of five unionized charter schools in Philadelphia organized by AFT Pennsylvania.
